It is a Theravada Buddhist holiday – called Magha Puja in some other countries – based on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the Thai Lunar calender’s third month. I don’t know exactly what it commemorates, but the next major Buddhist holiday is Vesak (or Wesak, or Vesaka) which is the most important one: it celebrates the Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nibbana.
